EPA Memo: Use Caution in Smokey Conditions

(Please click image above for full breakdown of AQI)

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe (SRST) Department of Environmental Regulations /EPA officec continues its recommendation that residents limit prolonged outdoor activities during smoky conditions across North Dakota, especially residents with known respiratory conditions.
Particulate matter, which consists of extremely small particles of soot and ash, have been increasing across the area over the last several hours. Particulate matter can cause irritation to the respiratory system, especially those who suffer from allergies, asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). During this period of smoky conditions, the Department recommends the elderly and young children to limit or completely avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure.

The current Air Quality Index is 82, a MODERATE rating. Air quality is acceptable. However, there may be a risk for some people, particularly those who are unusually sensitive to air pollution. If you are unusually sensitive to particle pollution, consider reducing your activity level or shorten the amount of time you are active outdoors

DEA Memo: Firework Waste

The purpose of this memo is to serve as an official Announcement from the Standing Rock
Sioux Tribe Department of Environmental Regulations /EPA office requesting community
support from each district to responsibly dispose of firework debris. Traveling throughout
the districts starting this holiday week, firework waste has been observed in numerous location,
with some left obscuring the road. We are requesting district leaders to assist with informing
their community to properly collect and dispose of firework waste.
This waste from spent fireworks can easily travel by wind onto the open prairie, around home
sites, and into the Missouri River. This waste material can also represent a potential fire
hazard, even after use. Please take consideration and responsibility for your community and
environment while enjoying holiday celebrations.

Any additional information or questions pertaining to this announcement, please contact the
Tribal DER/EPA office.
